Chinese Martial Arts · 中國武術 Kung Fu — 功夫 武術 · 武術 · 國術

Chinese martial arts — known under the umbrella terms Kung Fu, Wushu, or Kuoshu — encompass a rich diversity of styles developed over centuries across China's regions, cultures, and martial traditions. Training encompasses basics, forms, applications, and weapons, while philosophy, ethics, and cultural practice are woven into every aspect of study. This is not merely a sport system: it is a complete way of life, offering discipline, good character, and authentic transmission of knowledge passed down from master to student across generations.

Chinese martial arts is simultaneously a form of exercise and a means of self-defense. As a living expression of the world's oldest continuous civilization, it offers an extraordinary wealth of physical, mental, and spiritual possibilities — beneficial to mind, body, and soul. At Wu Tan New England, we offer you the opportunity to learn traditional Wushu Kung Fu as it was meant to be taught: completely, authentically, and personally.

"As a cultural manifestation of the oldest civilization still alive today, Chinese martial arts offers you a wealth of possibilities that are beneficial to your mind, soul, and body — a complete training system that provides not only a martial education but a lifestyle grounded in discipline and genuine human development."

Every class begins with one of the most important aspects of the art: courtesy. In each session, we make a deliberate practice of treating one another with respect and consideration — because the martial arts have always been, first and foremost, a cultivation of character. From there, classes move through a variety of warm-up exercises, then into the specific skills required for Wushu Kung Fu, and then into the foundational techniques that support all future progress.

What We Teach · 課程內容 The Complete Curriculum 六大課程要素
01 Forms — Tàolù 套路 The basis of art transmission — pre-determined sequences of technique created in ancient times by the founding masters. Forms encode the complete technical and tactical intelligence of each style.
02 Personal Defense & Partner Work Application of traditional forms alongside a partner — bringing the techniques of the art to life in a cooperative practice that develops timing, distance, and practical self-defense understanding.
03 Weapons — Broadsword, Staff, Sword & Spear Traditional Chinese weapons training — Dāo (broadsword), Gùn (long staff), Jiàn (straight sword), and Qiāng (spear) — extending the principles of the empty-hand arts into the weapons systems of each style.
04 Qì Gōng — Energy Development 氣功 Classical Chinese energy cultivation exercises — developing internal awareness, breath control, and the coordination of mind, body, and qi that underlies all high-level martial practice.
05 Combat — Sǎndǎ 散打 Chinese combat sport drawing on the striking, kicking, and throwing techniques of traditional Kung Fu — training the martial arts practitioner to apply their skills under realistic competitive pressure.
06 Shuāi Jiāo — Chinese Wrestling 摔跤 One of China's oldest martial disciplines — a sophisticated takedown and throwing system rooted in the principles of Yin and Yang, using the opponent's momentum and structure against them.
The Foundation · 武術精神 More Than a Martial Art — A Way of Life 武術不只是技術 · 更是一種生活方式
Courtesy · Lǐ Every class begins with courtesy — the deliberate practice of treating each person with respect and consideration. In the martial arts, character precedes technique.
Virtue · Dé Martial virtue — the cultivation of moral character alongside physical skill. Technical mastery without virtue produces a capable fighter; virtue alongside skill produces a true martial artist.
Transmission · Chuán The authentic transmission of what was received — unchanged and uncompromised — from master to student, generation to generation. This is the beating heart of the traditional Chinese martial arts.
